The crowd initially was a peaceful demonstration against Coach Paterno’s firing. The crowd quickly turned from a peaceful demonstration to a riotous mob.
The mob began damaging vehicles and rolled a news van. The mob attempted to light vehicles on fire, and tore down light posts and street signs. The mob threw rocks, bottles and hard objects at the police and citizens. Citizens and officers were injured by the mob’s criminal behavior.
Numerous dispersal orders were given by the State College Police. Through the University Notification System, all Penn State students were notified to vacate Old Main and downtown State College. State College Police had to utilize controlled pepper spray deployment to begin dispersing the riotous mob after injuries and property damage became unmanageable.
The State College Police Department has identified numerous suspects under investigation for such crimes as Riot, Attempted Arson, Failure to Disperse, Criminal Mischief and Disorderly Conduct. The Department is reviewing video footage in an attempt to identify suspects in other criminal acts. The Department asks the public for assistance by providing photos and videos of the riotous behavior. Once a repository of videos and photos of specific suspects is established, the public will be able to view the material on the State College Police website: http://statecollegepa.us/index.aspx?nid=27 .
